Home Grown Food

Growing your own food is a rewarding and easy task and can be accomplished in any size of garden.

The flavour of home grown food  is the key benefit. Many foods can even be grown in pots and containers if space is at a premium.

We can help you plan what to grow, when and how to maximise the growing potential of your garden.

Our top tips are to start small so you don’t take on too much too soon and to grow food that you like to eat.

When you visit us you can see our own potager garden where we grow herbs and vegetables for our café. We use raised beds to improve the productivity of our patch.

Tomatoes

Tomatoes are one of the most rewarding crops to grow at home because they are so much tastier than commercial tomatoes – bred to ensure a long shelf life rather than flavour. At home you can grow a variety of tomatoes with diverse sizes, shapes and colours. With our cooler Irish climate, tomatoes grow best in a greenhouse or poly tunnel – or if you have a sunny sheltered corner you can try them in a pot.

Fruit

Our range of dwarf fruit trees are perfect for pots or small garden spaces – apple and plum trees can bring a bountiful harvest in autumn. Other common garden fruits include strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, blueberries and rhubarb. Strawberries grow well and look terrific in hanging baskets – the flavour and aroma of your own freshly picked berries on a summer day is unbeatable!

Fruit is often easier to grow than vegetables – position in a sunny sheltered spot to maximise your yield.
